Budget 2008

WHAT’S IN A NUMBER

The Chancellor referred to continuing economic growth at about 2% whereas there are many businesses currently reporting falls in turnover and profit.

Similarly he referred to the need to keep inflation in check suggesting that the government will not be rushing to cut interest rates significantly.  Many individuals are complaining that they cannot pay their mortgages and others that they are having to cut back on their expenditure to do so.

Finally the Chancellor appeared to refrain from increasing taxes, but overlooked announcing that for many people there will be a large hike in their national insurance liability, e.g. £10 per week, which in turn will curb demand.
